About
My name is Serge Van Cauwenbergh (Belgium, °1973) and I’m a documentary and world photographer.
My passion for images and storytelling has its origins at a very young age. As a child I observed the world, I was utmost curious about events occuring in my environment. Everywhere around me stories came to live. I wasn’t always aware how to capture these aspects of life in a satisfying way. Although I was already overwhelmed by photography, as a teenager I was also attracted by film, however the latter appeared not to be the appropriate answer I was looking for. A few years later I came to realize that photography was the solution to capture my view on the world.
At the age of 30 I started studying “Photo Art” (2003-2007) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. During my education at the academy my interest in researching, documenting and sharing stories has grown very strongly.
I use documentary photography to record the ever changing world we live in. In my photo essays I’m mainly led by my own curiosity and interests. I’m focusing on issues that gradually change the environment and its population. By no means I’m exclusively influenced by the contemporary media although they can urge me to investigate and document a particular part from their news reports.
